AN UNDERGROUND LOGISTICS NETWORK THAT LINKS ALL SWISS CITIES

Cargo sous terrain (CST) is a Basel-based company's crazy idea to create a complete and automatic underground logistics system that will connect the major centers of Switzerland by 2045 (French and German-speaking Switzerland).

The first underground section will connect Härkingen-Niederbipp to Zurich and cover about 70 kilometers by 2031.

The logistics system focuses on the transport of small goods. Goods will be transported via tunnels from production sites to large logistics sites in the city centers. The final delivery steps will be carried out by environmentally friendly CST vehicles, which will mainly reduce road freight traffic and noise emissions along the entire way.

Access to the tunnels will be via "hubs", where goods will be loaded and unloaded automatically. Lifts will be used to link the underground part to the surface. These "hubs" will be strategically placed where existing logistics centers are located.

The idea is to have an automatic delivery system with driverless vehicles operating 24 hours a day, thanks to induction rails. These vehicles can pick up or transport loads located on lifts or ramps at strategic points. The vehicles travel through a 3-lane tunnel at a constant speed of 30km/h, whether it is for refrigerated products (particular vehicle in this case) or other types of goods. At the ceiling of the tunnel, there will also be fast conveyors for small goods.

The construction of the first section of the network, including the software, hubs, and underground and surface vehicles (for distribution in the city), is expected to cost a total of 3 billion Swiss Francs.

It should be noted that since December 2021, the Swiss National Council and Council of States have voted in favour of the Federal Law on Underground Freight Transport (LTSM), giving a legal basis to this project.
