GIVE STREETS BACK TO THE INHABITANTS THANKS TO A SMART TRAFFIC LIMITATION

Barcelona’s air quality was bad. The streets were crowded with cars, polluting the air and leaving little space for pedestrians and activities.

To tackle that problem, the city developed the Superblock (superilles) concept that limits traffic.

The Superblock concept works as follows: In designated building squares of approximately 400x400m, no through traffic is allowed. The local traffic that comes in the superblock is limited to 10km/h and parking is moved underground. This allows to get public space back for activities.

The concept was first implemented in 2016 and has been a great success. Cities around the world are considering the possibility of also implementing it.
